In the Chan research group, we conduct chemistry education research specifically at the post-secondary (college/university) level. Chemistry education research focuses on the study of teaching and learning in chemistry through a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. Our research interests focus on the following areas:
(1) Studying the effect of affective characteristics (attitudes, self-concept, and motivation) on achievement in general and organic chemistry classes across two settings: online vs. face-to-face
(2) Studying ways to enhance students' affective characteristics, metacognition, and achievement through student-centered group learning pedagogies
(3) Studying the effect of implementation of growth mindset interventions in gateway chemistry courses (i.e. courses with high DFW rates)
Results of these studies will be used to inform instructors about ways to improve course design, teaching, and learning in chemistry.
