The CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) helps high school students evaluate their academic preparation for college, especially for writing and math courses in college. EAP looks at a number of factors — including a student’s high school GPA, test scores and courses taken in high school — to identify which first-year math and writing courses are the best fit for each admitted student. Review this EAP page to learn more about our program and ways CSUF can help students and educators within Orange County.
Why Early Assessment is Essential
By following EAP recommendations, high school students can ensure they are prepared to succeed when they join the CSU. EAP gives students multiple opportunities to show the CSU they are ready for college math and writing courses without support. Students who complete general education math and written communication courses during their first year save time, money, and are twice as likely to graduate.
Multiple Measures for Placement
GE English and Math placements are determined based on "multiple measures" used to evaluate a student's academic preparation. You can review detailed information about each of these factors on the CSU Office of the Chancellor's Student Success website.
Measure 1
The first measurement reviews standardized tests, including the CAASPP exam results received in junior year of high school, AP, ,IB, CLEP, ACT, and/or SAT.
Measure 2
The second measure reviews High School Grade Point Average (GPA). This includes a calculation of "a-g" courses from grades 10 and 11 as reported on the CalState Apply application.
Measure 3
The third measure reviews High School Math GPA. This includes a calculation of 9th, 10th, and 11th grade math courses completed in Area C and quantitative reasoning courses completed in Area G as reported on the CalState Apply application.
Note: Algebra 1 and Geometry courses taken in middle school and reported on the CalState Apply application will also be included.
Measure 4
The fourth measure reviews high school and college coursework. This includes approved high school English and math/quantitative resoning courses completed with a "C-" or better.
