About the program
During this summer study abroad program, students will learn about Korean culture—one that is rooted in tradition, transformed by industry and technology, and marked by legacies of colonization, division, and war. Students will experience life in Seoul by visiting historical temples and villages, cooking traditional Korean food, viewing classical and K-pop performances, and trying their hand at calligraphy. They will take in sweeping views of the city from Seoul Tower and cruise along the Han River. A weekend trip to Gyeoungju will bring them to the Buddhist Bulguksa Temple, a UNESCO heritage site. While immersing themselves in Seoul and its environs, students will sharpen their analytical skills as they learn about Korea-US relations, Korean global migration, and tensions within the divided peninsula.

Susie Woo is a Professor of American Studies at California State University, Fullerton where she teaches courses on race and immigration. Her book, Framed by War: Korean Children and Women at the Crossroads of US Empire, traces how the Korean War altered the lives of Korean children and women on both sides of the Pacific. Her current research centers on prosthetics, interracial blood transfusions, and mixed-race children to explore how bodies changed by war altered the landscape of US involvement in Korea and Vietnam. A native Southern Californian, she loves surfing with her kids, baking and then eating whatever she baked, and reading or watching Netflix late into the night.
