How do I know if my Dropbox is upgraded?
Pre Transition Folder Structure
Before the transition, the subfolders and loose files appeared in the All files section of Dropbox for the team member.
Post Transition Folder Structure
After the transition, you will see a prompt in the app that your Dropbox account is updated.
Website:
Desktop:
The upgrade will be complete after the sync icon disappears.
Mobile App:
All regular folders, shared folders, and loose files are located in a new Member Folder in All Files. Users will only see top-level Team Folders in All Files and may have to go through each Team Folder to locate the subfolder that was shared with them.
Will I have access to my same files/folders?
Yes, after the upgrade you will have access to all files/folders that you previously had. The structure view will change, but your access will remain the same to all your files and folders.

Review the pre-transition checklist on how to prepare for the upgrade.

What happens to the existing Dropbox links I'm shared with?
All links will remain the same, and it is still accessible.
How do I know if I own a team folder?
What’s the difference between team folders and member folders?
You have two different kinds of folders after the migration.
Team folders
- Only admins can create team folders. If you would like to create a Team folder, please submit a Dropbox Team Folder Request in Service Now.
- Team folders can be shared with the entire team, certain groups, or individuals.
- Within a team folder, each file or subfolder can be shared with a different set of people.
- Admins can choose to allow others to view or edits the files in a team folder, or block access altogether.
- Team members can create subfolders within team folders, if they have edit permissions.
Member folders
- Your member folder is your space and is private to you. However, you can choose to share files in your member folder with other members of your team if you’d like.
- After the file system update, each team member will have a member folder. This folder stores the team member’s files, and any files that are shared with them. You can find this folder at “/[team name] Dropbox/[team member’s name]”.
What other changes are happening to team folders?
- Team folders will move from member folders to the Dropbox team space.
- Renaming a team folder changes the name for everyone else.
- When you create a team folder, you can choose who to share it with, and when.
- Team members can add content to team folders by clicking Create or Upload files and folders from the All files page. All files in the team Dropbox will be organized in folders, either in your member folder or in team folders. Team users won’t be able to add files to the team Dropbox root, and will need to add them to a folder instead.
- Sharing a folder with someone on your team reveals the file path name to the folder you’ve shared.
- For example, if you decide to share a subfolder called “Summer Campaign 2024” with a team member, they’ll be able to see the file path for the parent folders (e.g., “Design/Marketing/Summer Campaign 2024”) even if they don’t have access to those folders. The “Summer Campaign 2024” folder appears as a traversal rights folder. All folder and file permissions stay the same.
Who can access team folders?
Not all team members have access to all content by default. Admins can grant team members different permission to team folders:
- Can edit: You can view, edit, and manage access to the contents of this folder.
- Can view: You can view the contents of this folder.
- No access: You can’t view the contents of this folder.
By default, anyone with edit permissions to a folder has edit permissions to all subfolders inside that folder as well. For example, if you edit “Design”, you can edit any subfolders inside “Design,” unless access to a subfolder is restricted.
You can also share a folder by selecting edit or view permissions, clicking Copy Link, then pasting and sharing when desired.
Members of your team that receive an edit link can add the folder to their Dropbox account and collaborate on content. If an edit link is sent to someone who isn’t a member of your team, they’ll need to request and be granted permission before they can add the folder to their Dropbox account and collaborate on content.
How do I share my files and folders with my team?
If you’re the owner of a file or a folder, you can share it from your member folder with groups or individuals in your team. If you share a file or folder that lives in your member folder, only the file or folder that you select is shared. Nothing else in your member folder is shared unless you choose to share it.
You can:
- Share the file or folder by email
- Note: Whoever you shared the folder with will receive a folder invite. This invite shows where the folder will be added; either into their member folder or a team folder.
- Send a link to view or edit the file or folder
- Move the file or folder from your member folder into a team folder. This means that the file or folder will be accessible to everyone who can access the folder you’re moving it to.
What actions can mobile app users take after the filesystem upgrade?
Mobile app users can create and share team folders, but must use the desktop web browser to move, delete, rename, or duplicate folders.
How do I fix the “Can’t sync Dropbox account” error?
If you’re on Windows, you may encounter a post-transition issue that stalls the syncing process. If you get this error and check your sync status, it’ll say Updating Dropbox account or Upgrading database. This happens if you have applications open during the upgrade.
There are a few ways you can try to resolve this issue. Be sure to wait a few minutes after trying each option to allow Dropbox to start syncing. If Dropbox doesn’t start syncing after a few minutes, continue with the next option:
- Restart your device. Once your device restarts, close all apps before opening Dropbox.
- Log out of Dropbox, and log back in.
- Log out of Dropbox, and rename or delete the Dropbox folder. Then, log back in.
Once the problem is resolved, the sync status will update to show that syncing is in progress. If there are many files to sync, you can reduce the sync time by logging out of your Dropbox account. When you log back in, configure your selective sync setting to only sync the folders you need.
