CSU Student Companion: A Transformative use of Gen AI to Enhance Student Learning

The CSU Student Companion Gen AI application is a Unisys development project and partnership with CSU to define a transformative journey for students. We are harnessing cutting-edge technology (powered by the Unisys Intelligent Foundry running with Microsoft Azure and Open AI GPT-4.0 LLM) to boost student learning, curiosity, and engagement, all while prioritizing an AI framework that is intrinsically secure with responsible AI guardrails. The current Pilot Phase version of the Student Companion includes 163 textbooks in five academic disciplines (Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Psychology, and Government/Political Science); eventually in production mode, we will have ingested OER textbooks spanning virtually any academic discipline.  The model allows questions in virtually any language, despite having academic textbooks written in English; responses are delivered instantly in the language that the question was asked.  We eagerly anticipate the positive impact the CSU Student Companion will have on the CSU community as we push the boundaries of educational innovation!

This groundbreaking AI initiative, will not only elevate the prominence of the CSU System, but it has potential to yield several important benefits:

•Provides new individualized learning support to help CSU students excel in the classroom and beyond.

•Fosters greater incentive to adopt free and reduced cost textbooks in CSU courses, thereby easing the financial burden on CSU students.

•Offers students an intuitive and entirely non-judgmental tool to ask simple or complex questions on academic topics.

•Promotes digital equity by engaging in academic conversations in virtually any language that the student prefers to use, 24x7.

•Provides faculty with an automated and ubiquitous way to address student questions using trusted academic content.

•Offers the potential for research projects on the impact of Gen AI on teaching and learning.
