Concentrations

The CAS Major has 4 concentrations/options. 

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

This concentration emphasizes the development of children through age 8, as well as the education and socialization of children during that period, for students who intend to work in education and care settings for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and the primary grades.   

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SETTINGS

This concentration emphasizes the development, education, and socialization of children in elementary school settings, for students who intend to teach general education (multiple subject) or special education in elementary schools. 

ADOLESCENT/YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

This concentration emphasizes the development, social interaction, and identity of tweens, teens, and young adults, for students who intend to work with youth in community-based settings and/or to pursue graduate studies related to adolescent development.     

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY CONTEXTS

This concentration emphasizes the        “development of children and adolescents in various contexts including the family and community. It is intended for students planning to work with children and families in community-based settings, health or clinical settings, counseling or social work, and related fields, or for those who intend to pursue graduate studies in the developmental sciences. 

Minors

CAS also has two minors for the majors in other disciplines.

MINOR IN CHILD AND ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT

The minor in Child and Adolescent Development contains 7 classes covering development from conception through adolescence.

MINOR IN ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT

The minor in Adolescent Development contains 6 classes covering the development of tweens, teens, and young adults.
