about the display

The Gus Koehler Collection contains a wide variety of comic books, ranging from the mid-1960s until the early 2010s, which will excite researchers and students. The collection holds an impressive selection of Marvel Comics and assorted underground comic books.

The display features publishers such as Rip Off Press, Kitchen Sink, and other local publishers from the Bay Area. These comics illustrate how underground comic books captured the countercultural atmosphere of the 1960s and 1970s. They are an alternative from traditional superhero comics, and offer a narrative that relates to readers’ everyday lives. Underground comic book artists drew on the environment and culture around them as inspiration for their work.

The Gus Koehler Comic Collection will be ready for public use in fall 2018.
