Website Accessibility & Scanning

In following Section 508 and CSU Chancellor’s Office Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) for website compliance, we use a combination of methods i.e. automated scanning, manual testing, browser extension, outsourced broken link checker and other accessibility tools to reduce barriers and continually improve our website accessibility baseline.

Pope Tech Automated Scanning Tool

We discontinued using Compliance Sheriff. Pope Tech utilizes WAVE to identify errors/issues that don't meet WCAG standards. In addition to scanning your site, you can:

  • Create/scheduling reports
  • Track your progress over time
  • Access to easy to follow articles/videos on a variety of accessibility topics

To get started, submit a request for Pope Tech initial account setup and training. Training is approximately 30 minutes depending on questions you may have. Once the request is approved and a date/time is set, you will be sent an invitation to log into Pope Tech with your campus credentials. Please check that you are able to log into Pope Tech prior to the sheduled meeting date/time. If you have trouble logging into the account, please contact WebATI. After successfully logging in the first time, if you forget your password at a later time, please use the 'Forget Password' link and follow the instructions provided.

Manual Testing

During the scheduled reporting dates, our ATI coordinator will work with a student hire who is screen reader trained to manually test and flag a sampling of pages for reporting purposes.  We recommend all ATI contacts, perform regular manual testing to increase site accessibility. Don't know where to start?

Announcements:

  • CO update
    • CO and Campuses are going to be re-evaluationg current status levels for the November ATI audit. This may result in downgrades of a past level, but it is meant to bring a reality of what's happening now back to the CO. This is not always a bad thing in that if we need extra support, we want to show that we have a need to help reach the next level of maturity.
    • Talked about reporting process and they have some issues that they are bringing ATI awareness and bring resources and bring different needs to the campus
    • Changing the standards from WCAG 2.0 to WCAG 2.1, CO is updating their ATI website
    • Hiring more personnel at the CO for ATI support
  • WebAIM Document Accessiblity Training
    • WebAIM Document Accessibility Training - Word, Powerpoint, and Acrobat
    • Sign up for training we want to encourage anyone who deals with documents to learn about accessiblity
    • Word, powerpoint, document training
    • Registration link is on the Teams Channel as well - the question about ATI can also be posted on the teams channel if you are looking to get faster responses
  • Pope Tech Update
    • We are working on the integration with PopeTech and Service Now
    • If all the errors are not fixed in PopeTech the site will be reported as failing
    • If you are looking at the Campus Sites list and need changes made or see sites failing please get those sites passing. If there are changes that need to be made then send updates to Raven so she can work to fix the issues
    • CSUF is using WCAG 2.2 in PopeTech and that’s better for our campus to ensure a greater degree of accessibility
    • We have turned on Auto Crawling and we’re planning to turn on Auto scanning soon. We are waiting on some bugs to be worked out in the automatic upload process before doing that so keep going into PopeTech and running scans. The automatic crawling and scanning are there to help you but need to be reviewed. Make sure you're logging in and reviewing any errors. Fixing issues is how you'll get your sites passed.

Q/A Session:

Where are Google Docs at for accessibility?

Google Docs share the same accessibility standards as Word / Excel and using headers, tables, and other items would have the same set up.

Is the schedule of scanning still the same (Jan / May / Oct)?

Yes but we are now automatically scanning up the sites and then uploading the results directly into service now so ATI leads do not need to do that anymore.

Accessible Tables:

When using a table on a website or in a document, it requires Captions and Headers. Even if you have a heading above the table you still have to include a Caption.

Table headers can go across or down, or both. Table headers need to have defined cells so screen readers can read those headers to users when they go cell by cell. You can set header cells by right clicking and setting the cell type to header.

If you need help with tables, reach out to Jonni and she can help you understand the setup and usage of tables. This includes tables in web and / or other products like Word / Powerpoint / Acrobat
