OVERVIEW

SCAR Day provides CSUF students the opportunity to showcase their research, scholarship, and creative activities during CSUF's Research Week. SCAR Day is an amazing opportunity to present your work locally and build your professional network by joining CSUF’s research community. All UROC fellowship recipients must attend this conference.

Four reasons to attend SCAR Day

Expand your network by sharing and testing ideas.

  • Conferences are about building and strengthening a sense of community. These events allow you to build relationships with people who share your interests. It empowers you to create a more comprehensive network of people you can learn and keep in contact with while building your career.

Expand your knowledge and skills.

  • Whether presenting or attending, being present at a large gathering of like-minded people allows you to share your ideas and plans with others. Not only do you gain the opportunity to speak directly to others about their areas of expertise, but you can also learn quite a bit from the presentations.

Improve your communication skills.

  • Soft skills help you to build relationships and communicate more effectively about projects, which is why hiring managers find them so valuable when searching for the right candidate.

It’s FUN!

Between Two Worlds: Geometry and Storytelling

The concept of the deformation of space has captivated many bright minds over the decades. The deformation of curves and surfaces, namely their curvature, has many applications in our contemporary science. In his presentation, Dr. Suceavă will visit several historic figures who contributed to our understanding of the idea of curvature and continue to inspire researchers today.

The recipient of the university’s 2023 L. Donald Shields Excellence in Scholarship and Creativity Award, Dr. Bogdan Suceavă, studied mathematics at the University of Bucharest (B.Sc. 1994, M.Sc. 1995) and at Michigan State University (Ph.D., 2002). Since 2002, he has worked at CSUF, where he wrote the majority of his over 80 research papers in mathematics. His expertise lies mainly in differential geometry, but his works explore analysis, algebra, and the history of mathematics, including several chapters of geometry, from axiomatics to metric geometry. Besides his scholarly work, Dr. Suceavă authored 19 literary volumes in Romanian, essays, novels, short stories, and poetry; some of his literary works are translated into English, French, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish, Korean, Bulgarian, Italian, German, Swedish, Slovenian, Croatian, and Dutch.
