SON Scholarships

María Dolores Hernández Scholarship

Maria Dolores Hernandez Amount: $1,000 - $5,000 (subject to funding)
This scholarship is named for María Dolores Hernández, a nursing leader in Orange County and an officer in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, to support the efforts of nursing students who aspire to leadership in the nursing profession.

Criteria: This scholarship is open to current CSUF nursing students in pursuit of their Bachelors or Masters; Doctorate students are not eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 units in Nursing and not be in their final semester * 3.25 GPA * Financial Need *Leadership potential in Nursing

Applicants must submit a one-page essay addressing the following:

  • Outline your personal goals for professional involvement and leadership.
  • Describe your leadership capabilities and provide specific examples and outcomes/benefits to others.
  • What health care needs will you strive to meet?
  • How will this scholarship help you achieve all of the above?
  • Describe your financial need.

Stephanie Hernández Memorial Scholarship

Stephanie Hernandez Amount: $100 - $500 (subject to funding)
This scholarship is named for Stephanie Hernández, whose family and friends are keeping Stephanie’s legacy alive by supporting recognizing CSUF students pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Stephanie passed away just after commencement in May 2011. Her BSN was awarded posthumously.

Criteria: This scholarship is open to current CSUF pre-licensure BSN students who have completed at least 2 semesters in the CSUF nursing program, but are not in their final semester. Minimum GPA requirement of 3.25.

Stephanie Hernández (1989-2011): Stephanie dedicated her life to the service of humanity. She excelled at everything she did. She was academically well rounded and participated in sports. She graduated from high school with academic honors and as an athlete scholar. Stephanie was an incredible woman of character, a very noble, grateful and spiritual woman who never complained about the tasks or challenges at hand. While working at St. Joseph’s Hospital her love and compassion shined through working with newborns in the neonatal unit. Each task she performed was done with dignity and love as if each patient was her own.

Applicants must submit a one-page essay addressing the following:

  • Describe how this financial support would help to address your needs to continue your education.
  • Discuss how you emulate Stephanie’s values and characteristics of exemplary study habits, strong work ethic, dedication, motivation, and enthusiasm for life and the profession of Nursing.

Dr. Austin N. Diversity in Nursing Scholarship

Austin Nation Amount: $500 - $1,000 (subject to funding) - undergraduate ($500) and graduate ($500)
This scholarship was established and funded by alumnus Dr. Austin Nation to assist students in their academic journey who have demonstrated engagement and leadership in the community or in the Nursing Student Association (NSA), which he founded in 2007.

Criteria: This scholarship is open to current CSUF nursing students in pursuit of their Bachelors or Masters; Doctorate students are not eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled in at least 1 nursing course and not be in their final semester * 3.25 GPA * Financial Need *Campus or Community Involvement in Diverse Communities and/or in the Nursing Student Association (NSA)

Applicants must submit a one-page essay addressing the following:

  • Being from a diverse community, what are some of the challenges you have faced and/or overcame as a student (race, culture, gender. Gender identity, sexual orientation, etc.) pursuing higher education in nursing and what impact you hope to have as a future nurse leader?
  • Describe how you have significantly contributed to diverse communities through your involvement with on-campus and off-campus clubs/organizations (e.g. Nursing Students Association, community service, research involvement, professional nursing groups, leadership positions, etc.)
  • Include a statement describing your financial needs or the barriers you are facing, if any.

Titan Shops Scholarship

Titan Shops Amount: $100 - $500 (subject to funding)
This scholarship was established by the Titan Shops and is administered by the School of Nursing to support students who are in need of financial assistance.

Criteria: This scholarship is open to current CSUF nursing students in pursuit of their Bachelors or Masters; Doctorate students are not eligible to apply. Students should have completed at least two semesters in the CSUF nursing program and not be in their final semester. Minimum GPA requirement of 3.25.

Applicants must submit a one-page essay addressing the following:

  • Describe your educational and employment background.
  • Discuss your service activities within the School of Nursing, College of Health & Human Development, CSUF, and/or the community.
  • Describe your financial need; especially how this scholarship would assist you in continuing with your degree program.

Titans Give Scholarship

Titans Give Amount: $1,000-5,000 (subject to funding)
This scholarship is named for CSUF’s Day of Giving in which donations were made directly to the School of Nursing for student scholarships. The 24-hour fundraising campaign raised thousands of dollars thanks to our generous donors.

Criteria: This scholarship is open to current CSUF nursing students in pursuit of their Bachelors. Masters and Doctorate students are not eligible to apply. Students should have completed at least two semesters in the CSUF nursing program and not be in their final semester. * 3.25 GPA *

Applicants must submit a one-page essay addressing the following:

  • Discuss the ways you have given or been given to and the impact it has had on your life.
    For example, you might discuss acts of service you have participated in or the time you have dedicated to others. Another possibility would be to speak about how someone inspired you through their service, generosity, or kindness. You can touch on the ways giving has shaped your nursing journey and what you hope to pay forward in time.
  • Describe your financial needs or the barriers you are facing, if any.

Carlos Mendoza Bombela Nursing Scholarship

Titans Give Amount: $1,000
This scholarship was created by Carlos Mendoza Bombela, a trailblazing nurse and first-generation college graduate. Carlos was the first man in nursing to graduate from the MSN program with a concentration in Women's Health Care at CSUF's School of Nursing. Carlos received scholarship support during his undergraduate journey, and through this award, he hopes to support first-generation nursing students in overcoming challenges and achieving leaderships in the nursing profession.

Eligibility: Open to new and continuing first-generation nursing students enrolled at CSUF School of Nursing, pursing a bachelor's degree.

 

Criteria:

  • This award honors students who demonstrate leadership potential, academic achievement, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in health care and their community.
  • First-generation nursing student
  • Minimum 3.25GPA
  • Must be admitted to the nursing program, enrolled in nursing courses, but are not in their final semester of the program.

Must submit a one-page essay addressing the following:

  • Discuss family background and what encouraged you to pursue higher education.
  • Why you selected nursing as a profession.
  • How this scholarship would meet your financial need.
  • What impact you intend to have as a nurse in your community.

Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need through the application process.

This is an annual scholarship, and all students, including past recipients, are encouraged to reapply each year.

Lee Burcheld Memorial Scholarship for School of Nursing Award

Titans Give


Amount: $1,000
The Lee Burchfield Memorial Scholarship was established by the family of Lee Burchfield to honor her distinguished nursing career and lifelong dedication to adolescent health and education. Lee was a passionate pediatric nurse practitioner, LVN program educator, and school nurse in the Fullerton and Rowland Heights school districts. Recognized for her excellence in teaching and mentoring, she was named Teacher of the Year in 1988. She passed away in 2023, and this scholarship serves as a lasting tribute to her legacy by supporting students pursuing careers in school nursing.

 

Eligibility: Open to new and continuing CSUF students who meet the following criteria:

  • Pursuing a Master’s degree with a specialization in school nursing.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Demonstrated leadership in academic, professional, or community settings.
  • Demonstrated financial need by filing the 2025–26 FAFSA or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA).

Criteria: Applicants will be evaluated based on: Strong academic performance. Initiative demonstrated in academic classes, labs, student clubs, or community organizations. Contributions through independent study, research projects, internships, or club/team activities. Activities or efforts that have made an impact on individuals or organizations.

Application Instructions:

  • Work Experience Section: Attach a current resume documenting leadership positions held within the College or University (e.g., clubs, organizations, Inter-Club Council).
  • Supplemental Materials – Attachments: Applicants may submit an optional personal statement or essay.
  • Selection and Recognition: Recipients will be selected based on academic success, leadership, and commitment to making a difference in school nursing.
