Lactation Rooms/Rejuvenation Spaces

CSUF is committed to providing faculty, staff, students, visitors and job applicants with a private, secure, convenient and sanitary space to use for lactation. They are “Rejuvenation Spaces” and they are shielded from intrusion from others. Title IX

"Title IX is a Federal civil rights law

As a student of a federally funded institution, you are protected by Title IX. Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, and sexual orientation. Pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination and recovery therefrom are also protected under Title IX. If a professor refuses to reschedule an exam, allow you to make up work, or provide reasonable accommodations, contact the Title IX & Gender Equity office.

Title IX FAQS
What type of assistance must CSUF provide to a pregnant student at school?
  • CSUF must make adjustments to the regular classroom setting that are reasonable and responsive to the student’s temporary pregnancy status. Accommodations are made through Disability Support Services and are tailored to your specific needs. Examples of accommodations include a larger desk, requiring your professor to allow frequent trips to the bathroom, or permitting temporary access to elevators.
Does my professor have to excuse my absences due to pregnancy or childbirth?
  • Yes. Title IX requires a school to excuse a student’s absences due to pregnancy or related conditions, including recovery from childbirth, for as long as the student’s doctor deems the absences to be medically necessary.
  • If your professor changes your grade because of absences due to your pregnancy or related conditions, contact Title IX immediately. They will intervene on your behalf.
What if some professors have their own policies about class attendance and make-up work?
  • Every school that receives federal financial assistance is bound by Title IX. CSUF must ensure that the policies and practices of individual professors do not discriminate against pregnant students. For example, a professor may not refuse to allow a student to submit work after a deadline that she missed because of absences due to pregnancy or childbirth.
  • If your professor is unwilling to allow you to make-up work, contact Title IX immediately. They will intervene on your behalf.
I am expected to give birth near midterms or finals. What should I do?
  • Plan ahead as soon as you can. Make your professors aware that you may be giving birth at a time where there is an exam, and discuss alternate ways you can complete it. This may include taking the test online, at an earlier date, as a take-home exam, or another format that the professor provides.
How do I balance a heavy course load during my pregnancy and birth?
  • We recommend lightening your course load or taking many of your classes online during this time. Your health and the health of your baby is of the utmost importance, so consider taking less classes to alleviate stress.
I don’t want to drop out, but I want to take a break from school during my pregnancy and come back next semester. What can I do?

Pregnant students have a few options. They may take a stop-out semester, a medical leave of absence or medically withdraw from the semester. There are also retro-active options available as well. If you’d like to discuss your options in greater detail, please contact Registration and Records.
