What are Info Blocks

.Reduce the number of pages and provide users with easier, faster ways to find information.  Info blocks provide a standard set of fields which can be used in many different ways.  The biggest advantage is the ability to reuse content across the site.  Edit and save work in one place and let it cascade throughout your pages.

Info Block Basics

Think of an info block page like a database.  Each page has up to 50 blocks that can be used.  The interface allows editors to show them in blocks of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 to make it easier to manage.

Info block types

In the V5 templates info blocks are used for a multitude of resources all with the goal of keeing data reusable.  Edit once, reuse on multiple pages.

Info Blocks can be used as:

  • regular content
  • image gallaries
  • site hours
  • site events
  • newsletter creating
  • dynamic content
    • media layouts
    • applications
    • microblogs
    • directories
Data entry

No matter which type of info block you are using it all has the same fields.  For some items there is no need for every field to show and the interface will adjust accordingly; however, the 5 basic fields are still consistent.

  • Block Content - where your big story, idea, free form content is written.
  • CSS - each individual blocks can use the Campus standard styles
  • Categories - comma separate categories to make it useful to sort data in to groups
  • Tags - comma separate tags to make it useful to sort data in to groups
  • Details - using a dropdown of style names, mark up data into various labels for specific purposes

The data entry continues to use the built in Omni CMS editor so its easy to jump right in and use tools you're already familiar with.

Combine Files / Filter Data

To make it as flexible as possible we built the system to allow for multiple info block files to be loaded into the same interface on any page.

As long as they are the same info block type you can combine serveral different info block files so that users get a larger sample to explore.

The power of filtering data

The whole point of keeping data updated in one place means less work for editors, but it also means that you might have a variety of different information that is outside the scope of some pages which are targeted to a specific topic.

Just as its able to combine different files, it is also able to filter data based on categories and tags.  This way the content is still relevant to the page but editors do not need to craft more than one version of it.

Info blocks provide flexible options for almost any needs and we're still pushing into new ways of using them.
