GE Breadth Certification and IGETC Certification

Becoming CSU GE or IGETC certified will help create a more seamless transition to CSUF. Speak with your advisor or counselor at your pre-transfer institution about being certified or IGETC Certified and determine how it can benefit you. All California community college transfer students are required to complete 9 units Upper Division General Education coursework, regardless of the type or existence of certification once arriving at CSUF. What is CSU GE Breadth Certification?

The certification that you have completed some or all of your General Education Requirements. A student who is fully GE certified has completed the following:

  • 9 semester units of Core Competencies, AREA A.
  • 9 semester units of Math and Science, toward AREA B.
  • 9 semester units of Arts and Humanities, toward AREA C.
  • 9 semester units of Social Sciences, toward AREA D (including History, Constitution, and American Ideals courses at most institutions. Check with your advisor at your pre-transfer institution)
  • 3 semester units of Lifelong Learning, AREA E.

How does full CSU GE Breadth Certification benefit you once you arrive at CSUF?

  • Students are only required to complete the 9 units of Upper Division GE. (Per Executive Order 1065: "Students admitted to a CSU campus with full certification shall not be held to any additional lower-division general education requirements.")
  • History 110A and History 110B are waived based on GE certification.

What is CSU Area Certification?

The certification that you have completed a particular Area of the General Education Requirements.

How does Area Certification benefit you once you arrive at CSUF?

  • The student is not required to complete any additional coursework in the particular GE area in which they are certified.
  • History 110A and History 110B may be are waived based on the areas of certification. (Certified for Area C: HIST 110A; Certified for Area D: HIST 110B)
  • Some Lower Division GE may still be required (when you are certified only for specific GE area(s).
  • Students are required to complete the 9 units of Upper Division GE.Students will need to choose Upper Division General Education courses from specific areas.

What is IGETC Certification?

Intersegmental General Education Transfer Certification. A full IGETC Certification waives the student from taking any additional lower division GE courses. In this way, it is different from the CSU GE Breadth Certification.

How does IGETC Certification benefit you once you arrive at CSUF?

  • Full IGETC Certification waives students from taking any additional lower division GE courses.
  • If the student has not yet completed their American History and Government requirements, they must complete those courses before becoming eligible to graduate from CSUF.
  • Students are only required to complete the 9 units of Upper Division GE (Per Title 5 of the CA Code of Regulations: "All lower division requirements can be fulfilled by completing the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum") The Upper Division GE coursework can be taken from ANY General Education Category.
