Diversity And Inclusion

Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity

The Faculty Development Center is committed to furthering cultural awareness and responsiveness among faculty at CSUF and to providing programming to support the needs and growth of all faculty and students. The FDC’s work in this area not only supports CSUF’s strategic goals of supporting the success of our students, including those from historically underrepresented groups, but also the recruitment, development, and retention of a high-quality, culturally diverse faculty, and the creation of a sustainable inclusive environment at CSUF.

Each semester, the FDC’s Faculty Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion Matt Englar-Carlson, Professor in the Department of Counseling, brings together faculty guest speakers and facilitators for our diversity and inclusion programming. Matt organizes a brown bag lunch-time diversity series and coordinates book club faculty learning communities that address complex topics such as intersectionality, oppression, White privilege, social justice and action in the classroom, and developing the cultural responsiveness needed to support all at CSUF.

Inclusion

An important aspect of equity and inclusion is ensuring that course content and materials are accessible. Students in our classes have a variety
of   invisible   circumstances that can impact their learning.

Some of these circumstances include the following:

  • Attention or comprehension problems because of an emotional hardship or learning disability
  • Using a single device, like a phone or a tablet, for doing all of their digital coursework
  • Familial or other work obligations outside of school
  • A long commute to and from campus
  • Homelessness, or food or housing insecurities
  • Low vision, but not blindness; difficulty looking at a screen for extended periods of time
  • Difficulty hearing, but not deafness
  • Both the Academic Technology Center (ATC) and Online Education and Training (OET) provide resources to support faculty in creating accessible content.

Pronoun Guidance

As a University we continue to work to provide an inclusive classroom experience and campus environment for all people. As such, the FDC, the Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Programs, Student Affairs and Information Technology have taken steps to ensure that faculty, staff and students have the option to list gender pronouns across online campus platforms (e.g., Canvas and PeopleSoft). We hope these options will make it easier for faculty, staff and students to identify their gender to our campus community.  Learn more about how faculty can make these changes.

Faculty and staff can use this guide to view a few ways pronouns will appear in Canvas. You can also view the student guide for adding preferred names.

If you are unfamiliar with pronouns or simply want to learn more about the significance, we encourage faculty to learn more by visiting the LGBT Queer Resource Center’s Educational Resource page: What are Pronouns?
