Overview of the MPH Degree
The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree combines the study of the biological, physical, psychological, economic, and social forces affecting the human condition. The degree’s curriculum seeks to analyze not only the nature and context of public health problems, but also the organizational, behavioral, socio-cultural, and political constraints to ameliorating these problems. Through experiences in and out of the classroom, students develop the habit of intellectual inquiry, prepare for challenging professions, strengthen relationships to their communities and contribute productively to society.
Purpose
Our purpose is to prepare public health professionals to draw on the knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines to define, critically assess, evaluate and resolve public health problems. MPH program graduates will have a common educational grounding that enables them to work effectively with the broad spectrum of public health issues that they face during their public health careers.
Mission
The mission of the Master in Public Health (MPH) Program at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) is to develop knowledgeable, skillful health professionals who are proficient in disseminating and applying knowledge to prevent disease and promote health in the human population. Students of various academic and career backgrounds are brought together to receive advanced education in disease prevention and health promotion topics, with specialized emphasis on multicultural groups, organizations and communities.
Goals and Objectives
Instructional Goal: To offer excellent education and training, with the aim of developing superior public health professionals.
Objective 1 – First and foremost, we will recruit graduate students with the highest academic capabilities who are committed to public health.
Objective 2 – Is to recruit a culturally and ethnically diverse student body. We wish to have the makeup of our student body be representative of the diverse cultures present in both the California and U.S. population. We also want to give people from other countries the opportunity to learn and benefit from the American educational and public health systems.
Objective 3 – Is to offer high-quality educational programs with appropriate learning objectives
Objective 4 – Is to assure that students have solid and appropriate field training in public health practice.
Objective 5 – Is to become a leader in public health workforce development and training.
Objective 6 – Is to build an infrastructure that supports strong academic advising and timely graduation.
II. ResearchGoal: To originatehighqualityresearchthatcontributes to the theory and best practice of public health.
Objective 1 – Is to conduct and disseminate innovative research that spans the use of theory and application.
Objective 2 – Is to support the pursuit and maintenance of sponsored research by both faculty and students.
Objective 3 – Is to recruit and retain outstanding faculty in each advisory track, consistent with the mission of the MPH program.
III. Community Service Goal: To engage communities, students, and research partners in addressing public health issues among diverse populations.
Objective 1 – Is to collaborate with community-based organizations and county health departments to create healthy communities.
Objective 2 – Is to maintain quality service to the University.
Objective 3 – Is to maintain leadership and service to the profession.
Objective 4 – Is to increase the number and scope of programs and projects which improve public health practice.
IV. Institutional Goal: Create an environment that supports excellence in instruction, research, and service.

Objective 2 – Is to develop the leadership and management skills of both the faculty and staff.
