Undergraduate Fellowships, Scholarships & Awards
C. Jessie Jones Lifespan Wellness Fellowship ($1000). This fellowship was established to promote the engagement of undergraduate students in high impact health promotion practices that improve the health of underserved communities. The fellowship is open to continuing undergraduate Public Health majors, and who have enrolled in a PUBH 495 internship in an underserved community. Criteria: successful enrollment in PUBH 495; 3.0 GPA or higher; bilingual language ability a plus.Application procedure:Application instructions. Application deadline: All materials must be submitted no later than the end of 10th week (usually late October or early April) in the semester prior to the start of PUBH 495.
Kathryn T. McCarty Scholarship ($250). This scholarship was established by the Public Health Department of honor of Benefactor Kay T McCarty to honor scholastic achievement and outstanding research ability. It is open to graduates or undergraduates in the Public Health Department of who are working in a research capacity. Criteria: 3.0 undergraduate GPA, community/university service, research experience, promise. Application deadline: April 6.
Iran Navaie Community Service Scholarship ($250-$500, depending upon number of meritorious applications). This scholarship is in honor of a beloved mother and grandmother, and is presented to an undergraduate student to provide financial assistance for academic excellence and outstanding leadership and community service qualities. Iran Navaie touched many in her life. She left a great impression that will linger with all who knew and loved her forever. She was an active member in the community and strongly believed in leadership, helping others, and giving back to the community. Additionally, she was a strong advocate for higher education. She contributed a portion of her income to help ill patients who were having financial difficulty, abused women, as well as providing food, clothes, and toys to orphan children. An example of her service was providing shelter to needy individuals. It is hard to believe that she is no longer with us, but the angels are watching over her.This award is presented to an undergraduate student who exemplifies leadership through campus and/or community involvement. The recipient of this award has helped a community envision the future, identify paths to success, and carry out a vision. This student has exhibited integrity, collaboration, and intellectual, emotional, and social growth. Criteria: 3.0 undergraduate GPA and community service.Application materials should include specific examples of how the nominee embodies the description above. Application deadline: April 6.
Public Health Academic Achievement Award ($50, subject to funding). This scholarship was established by the Public Health Department to recognize graduating students who have demonstrated exemplary academic performance. Criteria: 3.90-4.0 GPA Summa Cum Laude. No student application paperwork is required. Recipient is selected based upon final GPA.
Public Health Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award ($250, subject to funding). This award recognizes outstanding academic achievement, community/university service, and professional promise. The recipient is selected by department faculty nomination with preference given to graduating students.
Public Health Department Service Award ($250, subject to funding). This award recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated solid academic performance, as well as service to the department and community. The recipient is different faculty with preference given to graduating students.
Drs. Leslie and Dick Richards Endowment Achievement Scholarship ($2,500, subject to funding). This scholarship was endowed by Dr.s Leslie and Dick Richards of Anaheim, CA, and is awarded to students to assist them in meeting educational expenses. It is open to new and continuing enrolled students in the departments of Kinesiology, Public Health, and Social Work who are pursuing an undergraduate or a graduate degree. Criteria: Financial need, 2.9 GPA overall. All students (previous recipients eligible) must apply on a yearly basis. Application procedure: 1) Complete the SA application answering all 7 questions and sign the certification; 2) Complete a FAFSA application (or have one on file) for establising financial need.Application deadline: March 5.
College of Health and Human Development Scholarship ($500, subject to funding). This scholarship was establised and funded by the College of Health and Human Development to recognize and honor students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and leadership to the College. This scholarship is open to continuing majors in the College of Health and Human Development who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, and who have not previously received a College award. Criteria: Full-time enrollment, 3.0 GPA, College, Department., or community sevice participation or leadership, financial need.Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application answering all 7 questions and sign the certification; 2) Provide a résumé documenting leadership positions held within the College or the University (e.g., clubs, organizations, InterClub Council); and 3) If receiving Financial Aid, attach a copy of your award to the application. Submit your application to the College of Health & Human Development, EC 606. Application deadline: March 5.
Graduate Awards & Scholarships
Public Health Community Engagement Scholarship ($1000, subject to funding). This scholarship was established and funded by an anonymous donor to assist graduate students in their academic journey within the Department of Public Health who have demonstrated civic engagement in diverse communities. This scholarship is open to new and continuing enrolled graduate students in the Department of Public Health who are pursuing a graduate degree. Criteria: 3.5 or above graduate GPA, in good academic standing, evidence of ongoing commitment to complete MPH program, community or campus involvement in diverse communities, preference given to student who demonstrate financial need. This is an annual scholarship, and all students (previous recipients are eligible) must apply on a yearly basis. Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application answering all 7 questions and sign the certification; 2) Complete a FAFSA application (or have one on-file); 3) Copy of unofficial transcript; 4) 500-word essay describing personal experience in diverse communities and/or personal experience as an immigrant pursuing higher education; 5) Submit completed application packet to the Department of Public Health, KHS 121. Application deadline: April 6.

Other Funding Opportunities and Resources
College of Health & Human Development Inter-Club Council (HHD-ICC)(varies). Undergraduate and graduate students (especially those affiliated with a HHD or university-recognized student organization) may apply and propose for conference and/or travel funds. ICC councilmembers will vote based upon a submitted proposal and presentation by the students. For more information on the funding requirements and forms, please visit the HHD-ICC website.
Public Health Conference Travel Fund (based upon available funding and number of meritorious applications). The purpose of the travel fund is to support student presentations at professional conferences. The Conference Travel Application Form (NOT SA Application) must be completed and submitted at least 2 months prior to the conference date.
Graduate Assistantships (GAs). GAs assist faculty with various duties such as data collection and analyses, laboratory supervision, developing source materials, and conducting literature reviews. Please note that new GA opportunities occur throughout the year based on new grants and faculty needs, so applications are retained if students are not placed immediately.
