About CASA

Since it was founded in 1981, CASA has always been an open, inclusive regional organization devoted to promoting the field of American Studies, particularly in California. Our annual conference regularly welcomes undergraduate and graduate students, K-12 educators, college and university faculty, and community members. Membership in the American Studies Association is not required of conference presenters and attendees.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CASA is pleased to announce the results of the 2019 Jackie Donath Prize competition for the best paper delivered at the annual meeting by a graduate student. This year’s recipient is John Gove (San Diego State University) for his paper “Activism on the DL: The Gay Liberation Front at San Diego State.” The runner-up is Tim Trevor (Long Beach State University) for his paper “Fighting Dogs and American Identity: The Cultural Evolution of the Pit Bull Terrier, 1870-1920.” 

 The prize committee also wanted to acknowledge two papers that deserved honorable mention. They are Quinn Anex-Ries (University of Southern California), “Detached Vaginas: The Racial Effects/Affects of the Fleshlight” and Isaac Rooks (University of Southern California), “‘We Wouldn’t Stand a Chance’: A Revisionist Ecocritical Assessment of Hitchcock’s The Birds.” 

 The Donath Prize Committee received a large number of terrific submissions this year and thanks all of those who attended our meeting in San Diego and submitted their papers for this year’s competition. Best wishes to all of you in your continuing academic endeavors!

CASA MeetingS

Every other year, CASA sponsors an academic conference to bring together scholars working in and around the field of American Studies. CASA 2019 will be held at San Diego State University. Recent conferences have been held at Cal State Long Beach, the University of California Berkeley, San Diego State University, The Claremont Colleges, Soka University, and Cal State Fullerton.
