Info Blocks: Dynamic Content

Applications

You can now add lots of data to any page instead of making separate pages for each item. The application type of dynamic content info blocks lets users control how they filter and search for data.

Filter Data

Defined in the page properties section for Filter / Extra Data

Scope content before the user sees it. In the properties tab, go to the section and enter filters in the box provided.

col: item 1, item 2, item 3;
cat: your category item(s);
tag: your tag items

When using the application drop down list, use the same field to add a custom label.

title: type the drop down label text;

Use commas to separate items and semi colons to separate each set. You don't have to use them all, just what you need.

URL Scoping

Want to load the page with a scoped view while keeping all options available? Use a query variable. When making hyperlinks use the variables and a value, or part of a value. If it matches, the application will automatically scope the data.

col

the collection / dataset that you want to show

cat

the category you want to show

tag

the tag you want to show

For example: myurl.html?cat=outdoor would automatically check off the outdoor category in the application you see below.

Snapshots

When you have multiple info block files with lots of data it can be overwhelming for users. Snapshots help reduce the amount of data by creating a placeholder, that is in the info block data file, where users get a portion of data loaded but can always see everything after they chose the snapshot.

snapshot-hidden

Will force any snapshot instructions to be ignored and just displays the content

If you want people to see everything at once on any particular page use this style. It will disable the snapshots on any section it's used but won't block snapshots for the info block file.

A well formed snapshot can be useful to people who may need extra support in finding data, but they are not required for applications to use them.

Search / Filter Options

These can help refine the UI on your pages.

no-filter

removes the side filters for data source/collection, categories, tags

search-box-block

Formats the search box to be underlined and the label larger text.

search-results-open

All search results will open by default where matches are found. Non-matches will be hidden.

search-match-hide

Any search text that matches will no longer show what the match was. By default matching text is highlighted to help users identify why the content was shown.

snapshot-hidden

Will force any snapshot instructions to be ignored and just displays the content

col-1, col-2, col-3

Will force data into 1, 2, 3 columns if there's enough room. Smaller spaces, or smaller devices, will override this setting.

Interface Options

Dramatically alter the way the data UI is presented.  These are useful for reducing the size of the page, or if the info block data is used more like a list of links.

filter-left

moves the filters from the default right side to the left.  This will not work with the application-reading or group-by interfaces.

app-link-directory

Turns your data into a link to some other resource. Users can search with all the content in the info block, but only the link will show.

application-list

Turns the info blocks into a drop down list which only shows the user the currently selected item.

application-inventory

Creates application where all items are opened and displayed.  This allows users to easily compare data between items.  Good use for promotion of resources or centers. Best used with minimal information in each data item.

group-by

    • When using a link directory this will reformat the links into groups based on categories, tags, and most of the fields within the details section of the info block. This allows your resources to be more easily found by users who might be looking for a specific type of item rather than a name you use.
    • col-1, col-2, col-3, col-4, col-5
      • when using the group-by style you can dictate how many columns will appear in the results. Columns have a minimum width so actual displays will vary depending on device.
Reading Lists

Reading lists allow you to use the application information like a table of contents with a left panel that has all content titles in a column.  Clicking on one of the titles will move the content to that topic and the user can easily move from one data block to another.

This works especially well for ordered or workflow processes, policy information, or when you want to provide a large space for your content.

By default when the reading list is used it will automatically open the first item and focus the page on that content.

application-reading

Creates a left navigation pane with all the titles in the order which the info block(s) are loaded. By default the datasets are created in an accordion group.

reading-no-group

Additional modifier which will force the left pane to skip accordions and all titles will show all the time.

reading-no-focus

Additional modifier which will stop the automatic focus on content.  Use this when you have multiple reading lists on one page which are not grouped together.

Data Entry

Application style info blocks are driven by the main content block within each info block section.  Applications are an easy way to add multiple pieces of content to any web page.  While there is only one content block per info block section you can use the bucket-content, accordions, and tab content styles to help make it more structured.  Use the CSS section to help add style choices to each entry where needed.

Metadata mark-up

Applications work best when the data is filtered for your users so categories and tags are a great way to help find exactly what they need.  When you create a cataegory or tag the interface will keep track of them.  Find a nice balance of specific enough but not overwhelming choices for your content.  Too few and its not doing much, too many choices and it can feel overwhelming on what to look for.

Category and Tag fields will auto format on the public facing pages with each filter item sorted A to Z.

Interface modifiers and data filters

filter-left

This style modifier will move the filter options from the right side to the left side.

Pre-filtering display data

Link to pages with with dynamic prefiltering

Add a url parameter (ie page.html?parameter=value) to preselect a filter choice automatically on page load.  This only scopes the data on page load.  It still provides users the option to expand, sort, or even reset any choices made for them in the filter panel.

Use page properties filters - restrict data per page / section

To remove data from display and/or filter options use the page properties field for "filter/extra data".  This will completely remove extra options from the interface and focus only on data that matches the filter choice.

The application below has been filtered to auto select the category outdoor.  In the page properties field the value cat: outdoor has been used.  If the info block data is updated with new information, the page will still continue to only show entries and options that match this filter.

Be aware that starting in 5.24 we are updating the categories and tags to match items that are on the page.  There may be additional choices that appear even when pre-filtering data this is because some items have multiple categories.

To make the matches expand we use the class search-results-open.

Snapshots

When you put multiple files together it can grow faster than you realize.  Its not a bad thing to have a lot of information but it can be overwhelming for the user coming to your page.  Snapshots allow you to craft a feature style entry point for your content.  Each info block file can have a single snapshot which when the user chooses to start there it will pre-filter all the items to just that collection.

Of course viewing all items is still possible with just a simple click, but this should take some of the information overload away from your pages.

Application with multiple modifiers

To alter the search feature style: search-box-block. Then when using the search we added search-match-hide, and search-results-open which will open everything that finds a match.  To give the content a specific three column look on the page we added: col-3 and no-filter.  Finally we disabled the snapshot by adding snapshot-hidden to remove the snapshot choices and show all data by default.
