IT Announcement - Virtual International Experiences Grant
Call for Proposals - due May 2, 2022
The International Education Committee is pleased to announce six grants ($500 each) funded by the Division of Information Technology to support the inclusion of Virtual International
experiences into classes at CSUF. The grants will support faculty in developing virtual
international experiences, a relatively new modality that shows promise in making international education available to more students at CSUF.
Traditional study abroad programs have a transformative effect on students. However, even
before the COVID pandemic these programs served only approximately 2% of our students.
Virtual international experiences grants hope to encourage faculty innovation to make
sustainable international experiences a regular part of the curriculum.
We are looking to faculty to discover the possibilities for international experiences across our
disciplines/curriculum.
Virtual international experiences can range from the content of one assignment to a whole class. Examples include:
- Create a virtual study abroad course (entirely new courses would need to be approved via the usual process)
- Modify an approved course to include virtual exchanges with students, faculty, or
professionals (COIL: Collaborative Online International Learning)
- Implement or expand high-impact practices that include virtual international
experiences, including activities that draw upon media and activities/assignments that
encourage international engagement

Please review the definitions and discussion of High Impact Practices at CSUF. Given that this is a relatively new field, faculty are encouraged to seek IRB approval and publish the findings from the experimental inclusion of virtual international experiences in their courses. Examples of places where such findings might be published include, the Journal of Studies in International Education. Additional information about the Institutional Review Board (IRB) can be found on their webpage.
