Creating New Folders & Pages

The core of any website is its structure.  A good structure organizes your website, and creates a clear order and hierarchy that is easy for users to understand and navigate. Creating well-named folders and files is the bedrock of a good site structure.  In this section, you will learn how to create new folders and pages within your website.

Make sure you are in the correct location within your site where you want your new folder to show up (is this a main folder, or a folder within a folder?).

  1. Begin by clicking on the New button on the top right corner.
  2. This opens up the New Content dialogue box. Select Create New Folder on the top left.

  1. You will be prompted for a name for your folder.  Use lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes only.
  2. Click the Create button on the lower right and your new folder is now in your website

REMINDER: How you name your folders and files determines your URL. Use lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes only. Use concise and meaningful language when giving it a name.

Just like making a new folder, be sure you are in the correct location within your site where you want your new page to show up.

  1. Begin by clicking on the New button on the top right corner.
  2. This opens up the New Content dialogue box. Select A Webpage: HTML on the left.

  1. The page title should be whatever your header 1 will be for this page (you can go into your page properties and update this at any time).
  2. Name your file. If it is the first page within a folder, then the file must be called index.  Otherwise, give it a name that represents the content that will be found on that page.

REMINDER: How you name your folders and files determines your URL. Use lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes only. Use concise and meaningful language when giving it a name.

Optional settings: You can choose to turn on breadcrumbs or hide the left navigation on this file.  If you are not using a left navigation file, you can just leave this setting alone.
